Our approach to Child Therapy

Child therapists at Toronto Psychological Services deeply value the opportunity to work with vulnerable children. Through significant training and experience we are aware that change, should change be chosen by our young clients, must be made within a supportive environment with a therapist who is both sensitive and respectful.

As child psychologists, we most often choose to use non-directive, child centred play therapy because we are well aware that positive change can never be forced or directed from outside of the client. We believe the therapeutic relationship to be central to change. The child centered theoretical orientation suits us best because we believe, like psychologists before us that “the therapist does not take a person-centered approach as much as s/he lives a person-centered way of life in therapy”.

Psychologists, psychological associates and child therapists at Toronto Psychological Services embrace both the philosophy behind child centered play therapy and the belief that all people, no matter what their age, have the potential for growth and change within them.

Our approach to toddler, child and younger teen treatment

The 6-session assessment period: It is essential that a therapist gain a thorough understanding of the concerns of the parent(s) and the difficulties that the child may be having. For this reason, children and younger teens (aged 2-16 years) always begin treatment at Toronto Psychological Services with a 6-session assessment period.

The assessment period involving treatment is not a diagnostic assessment which includes standardized testing and written report. How does it work? If a child is 2-12 years of age, parents attend an intake session and final feedback session without their child. Teens, aged 13-16 years attend the intake and feedback. After the parent meeting/interview, a child or young teen attends 4-sessions with their therapist.

During the final feedback session with parent(s) further treatment, should it be required, will be discussed in detail with the therapist.
